Guinea’s mining sector is well developed, and the country has large deposits of bauxite, used to develop aluminum. Guinea also has future potential with significant unexploited reserves of iron ore (including the world-class Simandou project). But there are concerns around the transparency and traceability of mining revenues, which may hinder the sector’s ability to drive economic and social development. Furthermore, corrupt practices characterize every step of the extractive sector decision chain. To address these governance challenges, NRGI works with civil society organizations and mining communities to strengthen their capacities and expertise to monitor mining revenues and to use mining sector data. NRGI also supports government officials as they pursue mining sector reforms, including the adoption of the new mining code, and ensuring that anticorruption provisions are included.
